Elcal Research LLC (Elcal), a Delaware company has developed and patented a space and water heating thermal energy storage system. It stores thermal energy when power is inexpensive or from renewable sources and releases it when it is expensive and/or needed. Elcal calls this system the Active Thermal Energy Storage System (ATESS). The key element of the system is a chemical called Thermal Energy Storage Material (TESM). TESM is used to store heat produced using local grid power during off peak hours or from intermittent sources such as wind or photovoltaic solar panels, for purpose of heating residential and commercial buildings during peak electric price periods. Since electric energy cannot be stored in quantity as electricity, TESM permits the storage of electric energy when converted to thermal energy. |
